Exporting and Importing Haves and Wants

A question has come up a few times on how to move Haves and Wants from one device to another or how to store Haves and Wants for safe keeping.  If you have two or more mobile devices (e.g. an iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, etc.) or would like a backup then this might come in handy.  The instructions below are split up between Android and Apple devices for exporting (saving) and importing (loading) your Have and Wants.  It is possible to share Haves and Wants between Android and Apple devices too.

Note: Exporting and Importing will copy the Haves and Wants from one device to another.  However, it does not clear existing Haves and Wants on the destination device.  If you would like to have a mirror image between two devices, first clear all the Haves and Wants on the destination device first (you may want to make a backup of course of your Haves and Wants using the steps below for ‘exporting’ and then saving the file to your computer or elsewhere.)

Android:
Exporting from an Android Device:

1) Launch MyMarkers.
2) Press the ‘Menu’ button on your device.
3) Select ‘Preferences’.
4) Select ‘Advanced’.
5) Select ‘Export’.

Now your Haves and Wants are stored in a file named MyMarkersData.txt on the device.  If you have an SD card then the file will be in the root in a directory named MyMarkers (If you don’t have a SD card then it will most likely be in the root of the devices ‘main’ directory).   In order to share this file with another device, either ‘unmount’ the SD card and then remove it or use your computer to copy the file.

Importing to an Android Device:

1a) If you have an SD card, then the exported file should be in the root directory of the SD card in a directory named MyMarkers. Make sure the SD card is in the device you are importing to.  1b) If you don’t have an SD card then you should have copied this file to your computer in the ‘exporting’ steps above.  Copy the file to a directory named MyMarkers on the root of the SD card or to the root of the device’s ‘Main’ directory.
2) Launch MyMarkers on the device you are importing to.
3) Press the ‘Menu’ button on your device.
4) Select ‘Preferences’.
5) Select ‘Advanced’.
6) Select ‘Import’.

Apple:
Exporting from an Apple Device (iPhone, iPad) :

1) Launch MyMarkers.
2) Press the ‘Help’ icon.
4) Select ‘Advanced’.
5) Select ‘Export’.

Now your Haves and Wants are stored in a file named MyMarkersData.txt on the device.  In order to access that file, you have to use iTunes File Sharing from a computer that the device is connected to.  With the iPhone or iPad plugged into your computer, bring up iTunes File Sharing.  Make sure you have selected the iPhone or iPad within iTunes and then choose the “Apps” menu choice.  Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and within the File Sharing section you should see a list of Apps and one of them will be MyMarkers.  Click on MyMarkers and it should show a file called MyMarkersData.txt which contains all your Haves and Wants.  Copy that file to your computer.

Importing to an Apple Device (iPhone, iPad) :

First, you should have a copy of the ‘MyMarkersData.txt’ file which was exported in the steps above on your computer.

1) Bring up iTunes and select the device that you want to import the settings to.
2) Go the the “Apps” selection in iTunes and then scroll to the bottom (‘iTunes File Sharing’) and find and select the MyMarkers icon.
3) Copy (or drag and drop) the MyMarkersData.txt file you exported to the MyMarkers documents directory shown in iTunes.
4) Launch MyMarkers on the device you are importing to.
5) Press the ‘Help’ icon.
6) Select ‘Advanced’.
7) Select ‘Import’.
